Opening February 2025 – We are excited to announce the opening of Hawke’s Bay’s first dedicated Urgent Care and Emergency Veterinary Clinic, conveniently located in central Hastings. The purpose built facilities and dedicated staff will provide excellent emergency care to Hawkes Bay pets when they need it most.The clinic will provide after hours veterinary care on behalf of all companion animal veterinary clinics across the wider Hawke’s Bay region.For the first time, pet owners will have access to fully monitored overnight care and 24 hour weekend care, with a veterinarian and nurse on site when CHB Vets is closed.

What to do if your pet needs care after hours:

At night:

  • CHB Vets clinic afterhours voicemail will direct you to the clinic.

  • Call ahead to alert HB AH clinic if you can, so they’re ready for your pet.

  • Gates close after 8 pm, but staff are on-site and ready to help.

Weekend & public holiday daytime:

  • Call ahead to alert HB AH clinic, so they’re ready for your pet.

  • Open from 6 pm Friday to 8 am Monday.

  • Walk-ins are welcome – no appointment needed.

  • On public holidays the clinic will be open from 6pm the previous evening until 8am the following morning.

What happens if my pet needs over night care?

  • We will explain the treatment and provide pricing.

  • There will be a requirement for you to transport your pet to the afterhours clinic

  • We will contact HB AH clinic and send all necessary medical notes.

What to bring to the clinic?

  • Any relevant medical history, medication and insurance details.

  • If your pet is on a special diet, please bring their food.

  • For comfort, bring your pets blanket or favourite toy.

Typical waiting times:

  • HB AH clinic will use a triage system to prioritize more critical cases.

  • Waiting times may vary, but they will keep you informed.

  • HB AH clinic is well-resourced and strives to manage cases promptly to minimize wait times.

Can I stay with my pet during treatment or visit in ICU?

  • You’ll be with your pet during consultation.

  • If surgery or intensive care is needed, you may need to wait in the waiting area, and they’ll keep you updated.

  • Visiting ICU is allowed based on the situation and safety.

Update on your pets condition?

  • HB AH clinic will collect your details and update you via phone or text.

Specialist referrals?

  • HB AH clinic will coordinate referrals to specialist clinics with CHB Vets, for advanced care

Cost and payment information:

  • If your pet is transferred from CHB Vets for out of hours care, we will provide an estimated cost before the transfer.

  • Upon arrival at HB AH clinic, the after hours vet will explain the treatment plan and costs and obtain your consent.

  • Costs of night, weekend and public holiday care are higher than regular daytime care.

  • HB AH clinic offers hospital care plans to ensure your pet receives the highest quality care.

Payment options:

  • Payment is due at the time of service

  • No charge accounts available, as HB AH clinic is a separate business from CHB Vets.

  • A 50% deposit is required on admission, with the remaining balance due at discharge.

  • Invoices can be printed or emailed for insurance claims.

  • HB AH clinic accepts cash, Eftpos, Mastercard, American Express (via payrix) and Afterpay.

  • Insurance pre-approval is not available after hours at HB AH clinic.

Picking up your pet:

  • Weekdays (Mon-Fri): Pets must be collected by 7:30-8:00am.

  • Weekends and public holidays, a pick up time will be discussed with you.

  • For ongoing care, transport will need to be arranged back to CHB Vets.
